How To Clean Gold Jewellry

Dish Soap Method

  1. 1
Put a few drops of liquid dish detergent in a bowl of warm water. Mix gently. For even better results, you can use sodium-free seltzer water or club soda...the carbonation loosens soil and removes debris.[1]

  2. 2
Soak the gold jewelry in the solution for 15 minutes.[2]

  3. 3
Scrub each piece of jewelry with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Stiff bristles can scratch the surface of your jewelry. Special brushes designed for this purpose are best, but an eyebrow brush will also work.

  4. 4
Rinse each piece in warm running water.

  5. 5
Blot dry with a soft cloth.

Ammonia Method

  1. 1
Use this method sparingly. Even though it's very effective, doing it too often can damage your gold. (Ammonia can also darken platinum.)

  2. 2
Mix one part ammonia to six parts water.

  3. 3
Soak the jewelry in the mixture for not more than one minute. Using a strainer can help with pulling it all out quickly at once.

  4. 4
Rinse the jewelry thoroughly under running water.

  5. 5
Dry the jewelry with a soft polishing cloth.

For Jewelry with Gemstones

  1. 1
Pieces of jewelry with gemstones that are glued into the setting should not be submerged in water.

  2. 2
Wipe the jewelry with a cloth that's been dabbed in dish soap solution, as instructed above.

  3. 3
"Rinse" the jewelry with a cloth dampened with plain water.

  4. 4
Lay the pieces upside down after cleaning so any remaining moisture won't soak into the setting.

Toothpaste Method

  1. 1
Use this method for gold items that you often wear.

  2. 2
Use an old toothbrush and tooth paste to gently scrub off grime. The toothpaste can be applied to a cloth to hand polish an item as well. This method will dull a perfect mirror finish, but so will wearing it.

  3. 3
    Rinse in clean water.

Boil in Water Method

1
If you need to get oil, grease, or wax off of gold jewelry boil it in water. So long as the item is submerged in water no harm will come to it or any stones. Oil, grease, and wax will float to the top of the water.

Getting Started With Jewelry MakingJewelry making does not have to require all that much. All you really need are some beads, thread, and a needle. With those items in hand, you are all set to make your very first bracelet or necklace. On the other hand, perhaps you are more serious about your jewelry making, or you intend on turning your hobby into a money-making business. In that case, you can reasonably expect to spend a whole lot more than if you were to simply settle for the abovementioned items.
Some jewelry making enthusiasts spend a lot of money on the equipment that they need, such as a blowtorch, kiln, good quality gemstones, beads, and settings, and the best jewelry making tools available. The great thing about jewelry making, however, is that it can be made to suit your budget, which is why it has become such a popular hobby among so many people all over the world.
Once you’ve made up your mind to start making your own jewelry, using beads and other items, you will need a reliable supplier from which to obtain all the jewelry making essentials that you will need.

Finding A Jewelry Making Supplier

When looking for a supplier there are some things that you should bear in mind. For instance, always choose a supplier that offers a good price range on a wide array of different jewelry making essentials, such as tools, settings, beads, threads, accessories, etc. Another thing to consider is the supplier’s history, as this will tell you a lot about whether they can be trusted to deliver. Some jewelry making supplier companies supply not only the public, but to the jewelry making industry as well. Such a supplier would be a good choice.

Jewelry Making Essentials

If you want your jewelry making endeavours to produce good results you will need equipment that is of a good quality. You do not need to purchase all different tools and accessories immediately. You can build your collection over time, as your budget permits and your needs require. Although you might find that you can obtain certain tools for cheaper prices, remember that your jewelry will reflect the quality of the tools and accessories that you use. While it is true that the kind of wire cutters an electrician may use will cut wire, you will find that the job is better handled using wire cutters designed for jewelry making.
If you intend to use tools like a blowtorch or a kiln for example, remember that there is an element of danger involved. You need to take safety precautions. Always maintain an uncluttered work area. Also, be sure to keep your work space clean as much as possible. Getting small pieces of wire imbedded in the skin is never pleasant! Also, there are certain chemicals that are used in jewelry making that produce toxic fumes. You will need to make sure that your work space has a lot of ventilation.
While on the subject of your work space, make sure that you have plenty of storage space for all the essential pieces. It’s a good idea to start with some fishing boxes that have compartments in them. Not only are they sturdy but also fairly cheaply available. Small items can be kept neatly in the compartments. Your work surface should be heat resistant if you will be working with heat, and there should be ample lighting.
